The Influence of the Role-Playing Method on Learning Activeness in Christian Religious Education and Character Formation of Grade IX Students at UPT SMP Negeri 026 Pearung

Abstract

Active student engagement is a decisive factor in determining the quality of learning outcomes, particularly in Christian Religious Education (CRE) and Character Formation, where the dual mandate is cognitive understanding and moral-spiritual development. However, teacher-centered approaches that rely on lecturing and rote memorization often result in passive learners who struggle to internalize values or apply them in daily life. To address this challenge, the present study investigated the effectiveness of the role-playing method in enhancing learning activeness among Grade IX students at UPT SMP Negeri 026 Pearung. The research employed a quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design. A purposive sample of 24 students from the population of 47 was selected. Learning activeness was measured through a 15-item validated questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. The role-playing intervention consisted of scenario briefing, role enactment, guided reflection, and teacher-led synthesis linking enacted experiences to biblical principles. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired-sample t tests, and effect size calculation. Results revealed a mean pretest score of 49.63 (SD = 4.633) and a posttest score of 56.54 (SD = 2.206), yielding a significant mean difference of 6.917 points (≈13.9% increase). The paired-sample t(23) = 6.613, p < 0.001 confirmed statistical significance, with Cohen’s d ≈ 1.35 indicating a large effect. These findings provide strong evidence that role-playing substantially enhances student activeness in CRE lessons. The study concludes that role-playing is a transformative pedagogical method, capable of fostering participation, reflective discussion, and value internalization. Although limited by design and scope, the findings highlight its potential as a core instructional strategy in religious education.
