The Competence of Christian Religious Education Teachers and Its Implications for Digital Ethics Education: A Case Study at SMP Negeri 2 Sidua Ori

The rapid growth of digital technology has reshaped education, creating both opportunities and moral challenges. In this context, Christian Religious Education (CRE) teachers are tasked not only with transmitting theological knowledge but also with equipping students to practice digital ethics grounded in Christian values. Their competence in addressing these issues is crucial for fostering responsible digital behavior among adolescents. This study employed a qualitative case study approach at SMP Negeri 2 Sidua Ori, involving three CRE teachers and eighth-grade students. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations, then analyzed thematically following Braun and Clarke’s framework. Participants were chosen using purposive sampling to capture perspectives from teachers and students directly engaged with digital technologies. Findings revealed variations in teachers’ competence across professional, pedagogical, and digital domains. Senior teachers demonstrated theological depth but limited digital literacy, while younger teachers showed stronger adaptability to digital culture yet struggled to systematically integrate biblical principles. Students reported awareness of online ethics, but connections with their Christian faith were weak, often shaped more by peers and parents than by classroom instruction. Teacher modeling provided indirect influence, though the lack of structured digital ethics curricula left gaps in students’ moral formation. Institutional challenges, such as limited training and resources, further hindered consistent implementation. The study underscores the urgent need for professional development and curricular reform to equip CRE teachers with theological frameworks, digital literacy, and pedagogical strategies. Strengthening teacher competence in digital ethics is vital for preparing Indonesia’s young generation to live with integrity, responsibility, and faith in the digital age.
