Development of Children's Language Skills Through the Use of Flash Card Media at TK Lentera Medan

Abstract

Language development in early childhood plays a fundamental role in shaping children’s cognitive, social, and emotional growth. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of flash card media in developing children’s language skills at TK Lentera Medan. Using a quantitative descriptive design, the research involved 40 children aged 4–6 years, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using structured observation checklists, standardized language assessment tools, and semi-structured teacher interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation tests to explore the relationship between flash card use and children’s language outcomes. The results indicate that the consistent use of flash card media significantly improves children’s vocabulary mastery, pronunciation, sentence construction, and expressive-receptive communication. Children demonstrated increased motivation, confidence, and active participation during flash card-based learning sessions. Teacher facilitation and modeling behavior emerged as strong predictors of successful outcomes, highlighting the crucial role of pedagogical interaction in maximizing visual learning tools. The findings also reveal that flash card media fosters social-emotional growth by encouraging peer interaction and cooperative learning, thus supporting holistic development. Flash card media provides an effective, engaging, and developmentally appropriate strategy for enhancing language skills in early childhood education. The study emphasizes that integrating visual aids with interactive and play-based approaches helps children acquire language naturally while nurturing confidence and creativity. TK Lentera Medan’s experience demonstrates that purposeful visual learning can serve as a foundation for future academic success and communication competence.
